Before the Fading, Tobrin was a wagon inspector on the line along the Great Dam. He walked along the train with a long-handled hammer, tapped every wheel and listened. A sound wheel rings, a cracked one answers dull, and Tobrin heard a crack before anyone could see it. When the grey sickness came, it turned out that people sound the same way: an arm going grey answers dull a week before it goes numb. Tobrin began to tap people. Whatever rang dull he cut away and put iron in its place right there, before the grey could spread further
Among the Rusted the iron of the dead is not buried, it is given to the living: a grandson wears his grandfather's arm. It is Tobrin who takes that iron off. He alone has seen what the Rusted keep under their helmets, and he never speaks of it. He himself is put together from other people's parts: his right arm came from a stoker at the Furnace, his left from a welder along with her torch, his legs from two brothers who worked the tracks, which is why his gait is uneven. He calls every part by the name of its former owner
One thing troubled him. He found a place for all the iron, down to the last nut, but under a dead man's helmet a light was sometimes still glowing, and there was nowhere to put it. “Light is not a part, you can't swap it over.” When Tobrin's own boiler cracked, he told his apprentice to take him to the Lull and take him apart there, by the Lantern. The apprentice did everything by Tobrin's own rule: the parts went to the living, and when the helmet came off, the light came out and went into the glass. His arms are worn all over the Dam now, and he himself comes out of the Lantern as an afterglow, whole, with his box on his back
He is calm and businesslike and says little, as if on shift. He taps everyone and listens to how they ring: that is his way of asking how you are. He never throws anything away, a nail, a button, someone's spring, it all goes into the box. It was he who fitted Marta with her winch, right by the mine shaft, and she still grumbles that the drum pulls to the left. He and Seyvar argue at every rest stop, quietly and politely: the Overgrowth plant their dead whole, and Tobrin takes them apart. They agree on one thing only: nothing should go to waste

Trait
Spare Parts
When an ally falls within 3 cells of Tobrin, a summoned one included, Tobrin takes a spare part off it and puts it in his box, up to three parts. The next Patch takes everything in the box: its heal and Shield are 50% stronger for every part, and 2.5 times stronger with a full box
Awakening at level 100: Tobrin is a spare part himself: when he falls, his allies take his box apart, and every ally within 2 cells gets the Shield of his Patch

Patch
Tobrin pulls a patch out of his box and throws it to the ally with the lowest share of health on the whole field. The patch flies flat, gets welded onto the ally, and a hot seam runs round its rim: a heal and a Shield until the end of the battle

Look
- bulky and stooped: a man inside a big riveted hull with a huge box looming over him, higher than his shoulders, so he leans forward under it like a porter
- a closed riveted helmet thrust low and forward, with two round lenses glowing warm amber
- a hull of mismatched plates on big rivets, rusty, brass and blued, a couple of them painted red, and the heat of a firebox glowing behind a round door in his chest
- someone else's iron arm, a gear and a spring sticking out from under the lid of the box, and above the box a brass wind-up key, the sign of his people
- his left arm, a welder's, ends in the brass nozzle of a torch with a small orange tongue of flame, and his right, a stoker's, ends in a wide screw grip with two curved jaws
- legs from two brothers who worked the tracks, one a piston and the other a cast riveted pillar, which is why his gait is uneven
How to play
Put him in the second row right behind the front line. Patch reaches anyone on the field, but Tobrin takes spare parts only from those who fall within 3 cells of him, so there is no point hiding him in a far corner. A patch holds until the end of the battle, and those who stand under blows for a long time love it most, like Unarion and Marta. With summoners his box never runs empty, a withered bush of Seyvar gives a part too, and Light of Hope makes both the heal and the patch stronger
He is fragile, only 424 health: assassins who dive into the back line and Silence before his first cast shut him down before he patches anyone. Wound cuts both the heal and the shield, and Dispel takes the patch off completely
