Before the Fading, Mitsel grew mushrooms in the cellars under the shift town on the Great Dam. Long damp vaults, racks up to the ceiling, sacks of sawdust on the racks and oyster mushrooms climbing out of the sacks. A lightline ran along the wall and lit the mycelium a little, so the mushrooms grew twice as fast. The work was done in rubber aprons and respirators: spores settle in the lungs, and old mushroom growers cough for the rest of their lives. Mitsel never took her respirator off from her very first shift
When Eru went out, the gardens above dried up in a single winter, but nothing changed in the cellar: mushrooms do not need the sun. For almost all the dark years the town ate her mushrooms. Only the lightline in the wall went dark, and the mycelium that had drunk its light for two hundred years began to look for a new one. It found it in Mitsel, since mana is light in the blood. The spores grew right through her filters, and her first caps were the two filters of her mask. Mycelium grows slowly and in every direction at once, and soon Mitsel could hear every step above through it
The Haze is heavier than air and flows down into cellars. When it came to the town, people climbed down to Mitsel, there was nowhere else to go. She let the mycelium run over every wall and vault, the cellar glowed like rotten wood in a night forest, and the Haze broke on the threshold. They sat out the whole winter like that on her mushrooms, and in spring they left for the west. Mitsel could no longer leave: over the winter she had grown into the walls. Her body stayed in the cellar, and her light followed her people under the ground, along the trench of a dead lightline, forty versts to the Lull, and rose into the Lantern from below, through the boards of the platform. Glowing mushrooms grow under the platform now, and the archivists leave them alone
She is quiet and unhurried and speaks muffled from under her mask, and her filters whistle softly on every breath. She measures time in flushes, the way growers count harvests: “two flushes from now”, “last flush”. She loves darkness and damp, squints in the light and hides her caps in the shade. She hears the earth: by the footsteps she can tell who walks behind a wall and which leg they limp on. She speaks of death tenderly, like a good housekeeper: everything that falls becomes earth, and the earth is mycelium. She feeds everyone mushrooms and is hurt if they don't eat
Seyvar calls everyone in the squad plants, but her he calls by name and with respect: a mushroom is not a plant. He sows, and she helps many of his seeds come up. Tobrin tapped her with his wrench and was silent for a long time: she answers dull all over, from head to boots. “I'm not grey, I'm loose soil”, Mitsel laughs into her mask. Marta asks her at every meeting whether caps like hers can be fried, and Mitsel always answers: “They can. Just not mine”
Abilities by rank

Trait
Mycelium
Every attack and every ability of Mitsel infects an enemy with spores, and the spores stay in it until the end of the battle. While an infected enemy stands on one cell, a layer of mycelium grows in it every 1.5 s, up to five layers. Each layer slows its attack speed by 6%, and at five layers it attacks 30% slower. As soon as the enemy leaves its cell, by its own step, a dash, a leap, a knockback or a pull, the mycelium tears: the layers are gone, the spores stay, and on the new spot it all starts again. Cleanse removes both the spores and the layers
Awakening at level 100: when the mycelium reaches its fifth layer, it clogs the enemy's throat with spores and Silences it for 1.5 s. Tear the mycelium, let it grow back, and the Silence comes again

Ability 1 · mana 90, starts with 20
Puffball
Mitsel snatches a ripe puffball from her basket and throws it at her target. The puffball bursts into a cloud of spores over the target and the cells next to it: everyone it covers is infected and gets 3 stacks of Poison for 5 s. The target it hit also gets a Curse for 4 s
| Rank | From level | Poison per stack per second | Curse, % |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 1 | 7 | 8 |
| II | 20 | 13 | 10 |
| III | 40 | 20 | 12 |
| IV | 60 | 30 | 14 |
| V | 80 | 42 | 16 |

Ability 2 · cooldown 10 s, opens at level 30
Fairy Ring
A ring of glowing mushrooms bursts out of the ground all at once around the enemy with the most layers of mycelium, and every ally on the cells next to that enemy is healed at once. If no one has a layer yet, the ring waits for the first one. The first time comes at second 5 of the battle
| Rank | From level | Heal |
|---|---|---|
| I | 30 | 160 |
| II | 55 | 260 |
| III | 80 | 530 |

Look
- short, stocky and stooped, as if she spent her whole life under a low vault: a woman no longer young in working rubber that her mycelium has grown through
- a huge mushroom cap in place of a hat, with gills glowing lime green underneath like rotten wood in a night forest, and clusters of honey colored caps on her shoulders and chest
- half her face hidden by an old black rubber respirator with round brass filters, and both filters have sprouted: a tight cluster of caps grows out of each, like honey mushrooms on a stump
- above the mask the pale skin of someone who has not seen the sky for forty years and tired light eyes, and from under her kerchief hang soft white threads of mycelium like cotton wool
- a long dark olive rubber apron stitched through with white threads over a quilted jacket the color of faded ochre, one arm in a long rubber glove and the other bare, with threads winding up to the elbow
- a wicker mushroom basket on her arm full of ripe puffballs, white balls the size of a fist with cracked brown tops, and knee high rubber boots felted over with white mycelium
How to play
Put her in the second row no more than three cells from the enemy front line: her attacks and Puffball infect those who will stand and fight, and the mycelium needs the enemy to stand still. She is best next to those who hold enemies in place. Unarion gathers them on himself with Taunt, Seyvar's bushes stand in their way, and an enemy Rooted by Seyvar's roots cannot tear the mycelium even if it wants to. Fairy Ring rises around the most overgrown enemy and heals those who fight it, so she needs her own front line: Unarion, Marta, Seyvar's bushes. Careful with Marta: her winch drags an enemy across the ground and tears its mycelium, so let Marta hunt on the other flank
She is strongest in long battles and against those who stand still all battle long: guardians, bosses, enemy rangers. Drop of Light for an early Puffball, Rigger's Gloves for faster attacks that infect sooner and build mana, and Field Medkit, which makes the ring stronger, suit her. Cleanse, which removes the spores together with the layers, enemies who never stop moving, like assassins and leapers, and short battles where the mycelium has no time to grow work well against her. She is fragile, 440 health: assassins who dive into the back line take her out before her first Puffball
