Before the Fading, Irveta riveted the sluice gates of the Great Dam. Riveting took a crew of four. The heater heated the rivets in a forge and tossed them up the scaffolding with tongs, the catcher caught them in flight with a tin cone, the holder pressed a dolly against the head, and the riveter hammered the tail flat. Irveta came onto the scaffolding as a catcher at fourteen and caught rivets that flew to her across half a span. Ten years later she was the fastest riveter on the Dam, and her crew stitched a seam in one breath, to a shared count of “one, two, clink”

When the Haze came, the crew began to go grey one by one. First went Yas the heater, then the catcher and the holder. The Rusted give the iron of the dead to the living, and Tobrin turned the forge of Yas into a boiler and fitted it on her back: now the rivets heat up behind her shoulders and go through a hose straight into her gun. The piston in the gun works for the holder, the magazine for the catcher. So Irveta became a whole crew in one hull and joined the Rusted Watch, which holds the walls of the Dam. Anything that climbs out of the murk up the concrete she rivets as evenly as she once riveted the gates. She came up with the boiler charge there too: one night the rivets ran out, she poured boiling water from the boiler into a hollow rivet, and it burst with such a blast of steam that it swept three off the wall

She spent her last night at the Dead Turbine, where a gate had sprung a leak and the grey were crawling out of the gap. Irveta stood in the breach and riveted till morning. She closed the seam, but in the morning she forgot to wind herself up, and her spring ran out halfway through a turn. The Watch found her on her knees in the middle of the breach, leaning on her gun, with the last rivet still in the barrel. No one could pry her fingers off it. A week later the Lanternkeeper Selma walked along the crest. She turned the key in Irveta's back one turn, and the light came out from under the helmet and went into the Lantern. The seam at the Dead Turbine holds to this day

She is lively and quick and does everything to a count: she walks in time, cleans her gun in time, and when she is silent she drums the rhythm on the stock with her fingers. She cannot stand silence. She is proud of her speed and of her seams: her own hull is riveted in even rows, not one crooked rivet, and she looks at other people's patches with pity. She does not trust welding: “A weld cracks, a rivet holds.” She and Tobrin have argued over it ever since he fitted her forge. In battle Marta feeds her enemies with her winch, the way the heater once fed her rivets, and with Brakhin she argues over who is faster, his pump or her piston. She keeps the score and always wins by one rivet. Sometimes in battle she shouts over her shoulder “Yas, a hot one!”, as if the heater still stood behind her. In a way he does: his forge is on her back

Trait

Crew Rhythm

Every attack of Irveta drives a hot rivet into her target. Rivets stay in an enemy for 5 s, each new one refreshes the time, up to five in one enemy. The more of her rivets in her current target, the faster she rivets: +5% attack speed for each, up to +25% on a full seam. The rivets sit in the target, not on Irveta, so she starts a new target with the rivets already in it, and if she comes back to an old one before its rivets cool down, she is right back in rhythm. A miss drives no rivet

Awakening at level 100: the whole crew falls into rhythm: allies within 2 cells of Irveta who hit her target also get +5% attack speed for each of her rivets in it

Seam

Ability 1 · mana 80, starts with 20

Seam

Irveta lowers her barrel to her feet and in one motion stitches a line of rivets through her target to the edge of the board. Every enemy on that line takes physical damage and is Rooted for 1 s: the rivet nails it to the ground. Every such rivet counts toward Crew Rhythm too

Boiler Charge

Ability 2 · cooldown 10 s, opens at level 30

Boiler Charge

Irveta turns the valve on her hose and lets the whole boiler into the barrel at once. A thick brass charge, riveted hollow and filled with boiling water, hits her current target and bursts into steam: the target and the enemies on the cells next to it take magic damage, and each of them gets two rivets from the burst charge. The first charge comes at second 5 of the battle

Look

  • bulky like all the Rusted: a woman inside a big riveted hull, tall and straight like a post on a wall, in steps like a tower
  • a closed riveted helmet with two round lenses glowing warm amber, and over it a red kerchief with white polka dots tied in a knot on top, the one thing that tells you there is a woman inside
  • a hull riveted in neat even rows, her own work, rust and brass without a single crooked patch, and a round firebox door in her chest with red heat glowing through the slots
  • a tall riveted boiler on her back, made from the forge of her heater Yas, with a smokestack above her helmet, hot rivets glowing at its bottom and a brass wind-up key sticking out at its side
  • a steam riveting gun almost as long as her hull: a long brass barrel with a wide cup at the end, a tube magazine full of red hot rivets on top and a thick hose from the boiler with a brass valve wheel
  • mismatched arms, one cast iron with a yellow and black striped band of the Watch and one brass on hinges, and short heavy legs with iron spikes on the toes for wet concrete

How to play

Put her in the back row behind a guardian with Taunt: Unarion holds the enemies in place, and Irveta drives rivet after rivet into one of them until she is in full rhythm. She is best against those who live long, guardians, elites and bosses. Against a swarm of small fry she is weaker, as the target falls before the seam builds up, but Boiler Charge seeds the neighbors of the target with rivets, and the next target does not start from zero. Seam runs from her through her target, so put her facing the enemy the guardian holds, and the line goes through the thickest crowd. Rooted enemies cannot leap or dash, so divers on that line never reach her. Marta drags a far enemy to the front line, and Seam keeps it there

Rigger's Gloves, Sharpened Rebar and Lucky Shiv suit her, and the One Spot perk stacks with her trait. Blind and evasion work well against her, since a miss drives no rivet, and so do assassins who reach her before her first Seam (she has 440 health) and anything that knocks her off her target: knockbacks, a Taunt onto her, invisibility
