Medva, a brown she-bear, is the mother of the Wagon clan. Her grandmother was carried along the old lines in a travelling menagerie: twelve wagons in red and cream stripes, with the bears in the last one. In the ring they put human hats on the bears and taught them to bow, and people laughed. On the night of the Fading the train stopped in a dead end by the Lull halt and never moved again. The keepers went to find out what had happened to the light and never came back, and the animals stayed locked in. On the ninth day Medva's grandmother tore the door of the bear wagon off its runners, and the bears came out
They did not leave. The clan still lives in that train, a family to a wagon, and calls itself the Wagon clan. Medva was born there, on the straw of the last wagon, and was one of the first to speak. Her first word was “all”: she said it to her mother when she had counted the little ones after a blizzard. Ever since she counts her own after every trouble, by heads and out loud. She had three cubs of her own and nursed a score of others: wolf cubs, piglets, kids that fell off the wall of the Dam right onto the wagon roofs. That is why they call her the mother of the clan. The bear law is short: when one of yours falls, stand over them. A she-bear does not lead her cub away from a blow, she stands over it and takes the blow herself. Medva took the round hatch lid off the roof of the bear wagon: what once kept the bears in now keeps everyone else out
The Haze is drawn to light, and nothing on the whole Dam burned brighter than the Lantern. That winter the grey came to the Lull as a pack: faded linemen from the crest and wild dogs in signal vests. Selma fell on the platform, and the Lantern rolled out of her hands. Medva stood over them both with her lid, as the clan law says, and held till dawn. In the morning the grey left. Medva stayed on her knees over the Lanternkeeper with the lid on her back, and her light went into the glass she had covered with herself all night. Selma lived several more winters and every winter brought bright salt to the wagons for the cubs to lick
She is slow and quiet, says little, low and as if growling. She is hard to anger, but whoever touches one of hers sees her at her full height. She counts everyone as her own from the first meeting: “Whose are you? Mine now.” After a battle she counts the squad by heads and does not settle until the count adds up. She does not like people, for the ring and the hats, yet wears human armor she took off the grey herself, and none of it fits her. Stavr calls her his downstairs neighbor: his trail ran right above her dead end, and young goats that fell off the wall landed on her wagon roofs. Varga hates being counted with everyone else like a cub, but when Medva loses count, Varga is the first to call “here”. Tobrin once tapped the wheels of the menagerie on this line, and now after every battle he taps her lid with his wrench: “Rings. Sound.” No one else may touch it
Abilities by rank
Trait
Hands Off
An enemy that hits an ally below 50% health within 2 cells of Medva with a direct blow, an attack or a single target ability, is Taunted for 1.5 s: it drops the wounded one and comes at her. The same enemy at most once every 2 s. Area damage and damage over time do not set it off
Awakening at level 100: whoever touched the wounded is prey for the whole pack: an enemy pulled onto her by Hands Off also gets Vulnerability to physical damage of 10% for 5 s

Ability 1 · mana 110, starts with 40
Roar
Medva rises to her full height, spreads her paws and roars. Enemies within 2 cells are Taunted, and for 3 s she herself takes less damage
| Rank | From level | Taunt | Less damage taken, % |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | 1 | 1.5 s | 25 |
| II | 20 | 1.75 s | 30 |
| III | 40 | 2 s | 35 |
| IV | 60 | 2.25 s | 40 |
| V | 80 | 2.5 s | 45 |

Ability 2 · when a hero ally within 3 cells drops below 30% health, at most once every 10 s, opens at level 30
Cover
When a hero ally within 3 cells drops below 30% health, Medva leaps to him and drives her hatch lid into the ground beside him: he gets a Shield for 4 s. If he already stands next to her, she does not leap, and rooted she covers only a neighbor. While the shield holds, a hatch icon hangs over him, and Hands Off at once pulls onto Medva everyone who tries to finish him off

Look
- a huge brown she-bear on her hind legs, the heaviest silhouette among the Fangs: a human posture, but all of her is a mountain of fur with sloping shoulders and a low set head, old, grey on the nape and muzzle, yet not frail
- bared fangs, knitted brows and ears pressed back, small dark amber eyes fixed on whoever comes from the right, and stripes of white lime across her muzzle, the sign of the Wagon clan
- a round riveted hatch lid from the roof of the bear wagon, held up from the inside like a shield, from her knees to her muzzle, covered in white paw prints, one for every one she has covered, with the slanted red stripe of the menagerie
- a small human helmet on top of her head that sits on her like a little cap, and human armor taken off the grey, none of it her size: a crumpled breastplate and a pauldron the size of her palm
- her right forearm, broken once, held together by two bolted rail joint bars, and the same bars on her shin: that is how the Fangs mend bones
- no weapon and no shoes: she stands on her whole foot with long dark claws out and fights with her lid and her claws
How to play
Put her in the front line closer to the middle, so that both her neighbors on the front and those right behind them are within 2 cells: Hands Off catches only those who hit the wounded next to her, and Cover reaches 3 cells. She is needed most by those who throw themselves under blows and lose health fast. After The Drive Varga ends up alone among enemies, and Medva leaps after her. Tobrin patches the same wounded ally she covered, and the shield of Stavr's Alarm makes her unstoppable just as she pulls the crowd onto herself. The cell she leaves is best held by Unarion: no push or hook moves him. On a boss Taunt works in full, and Medva keeps it on herself
Silence and Stun before her first Roar, Root (without the leap she covers only a neighbor), knockbacks that carry her away from the wounded, area damage and damage over time work well against her: Hands Off catches only direct blows. Dispel takes the shield of Cover off. She has one weak spot: once she leaps to a wounded ally, her own cell stays empty and the line gets a hole
