Mendion
Batch Twelve, one of the earliest and most brittle Etalons. The law of the works sent cracked brothers to the mill, and he filled their cracks with gold instead. Whatever he mends holds a blow better than whole, and a fallen ally he puts back together from shards

Mendion is Batch Twelve, one of the earliest. Back then the kiln of the Assembly Yard could not hold an even heat yet, and the early batches came out brittle: they cracked from frost, from a blow, or just at night, standing still. The Steward ruled that rejects are not repaired. A cracked brother was put out and taken to the reject mill, ground into grog, the crumb of fired clay, and the crumb went into the clay of the next batch to make it stronger. So every new Etalon is kneaded on old rejects. The Steward put Mendion in charge of the mill: an early batch, brittle, fit for grog himself, so let him at least grind
Every morning on his way to the mill Mendion passed the Calibration Hall, where Unarion stood under glass, and every morning he saw the cracks of the standard, filled with gold. One day he stopped and did the count: by the law of the works the standard should have been ground first. So the law was wrong. That day he fed no one to the millstones. He took gold from the store, thinned it with dry light from a battery and filled the crack of the first brother they brought in. He did not hide the crack: the gold lay along the very line of the break, in plain sight, and where the clay cracked, the gold will not crack again
A crack can be filled, a chip cannot: the Steward counts the clay of the works down to the handful. When a brother came in with a piece knocked off, Mendion chipped a piece off himself, fitted it in place and joined it with gold, and filled the hole in himself with pure gold. Mended brothers were no longer let into the yard, so as not to spoil the calibration, but out in the grey lands hundreds of Etalons walk with golden seams, and almost every one of them carries a shard of Mendion. The Steward never gave him a name, in the books of the works he is a number in the column of rejects. The brothers he mended named him Mendion, after an old word for a flaw
When the quarrel over one will began and the Steward decided to calibrate everyone again to one standard, he ordered the mended ones brought back and ground: a reject with gold is still a reject. Mendion locked the mill and walked out of the gates after Unarion. By then so little clay was left in him that only the gold held him together, every frost gave him a new crack, and he no longer filled them: he carried his gold to his brothers. He reached the Lull when Unarion already stood by the Lantern as a sentry. The Lantern is put together from scraps of glass of all ten lamps, and Mendion looked at it for a long time, then said: “Good work. The seams are in plain sight.” That night he fell apart, and his light went into the glass. The archivists put his shards in a box in the depot, and there is no one to mend them
He is quiet, slow and very careful, and speaks softly. He never hurries: gold does not like haste, and you do not touch a seam until it sets. He never says “reject”, he says “with a history”. At rest stops he mends everything that has cracked, a mug, a rifle butt, someone's pipe, and takes nothing for it. He calls Unarion his teacher, though Unarion never showed him a thing: for thirty years he learned from his seams through the glass, and at every calibration Unarion tells him the same: “Reject. Fit.” Akrion once offered to straighten his seams, and Mendion answered that a crack knows the way better than a ruler

Trait
Golden Seam
Mendion mends everything with gold: an ally healed by Gold Fill wears a golden seam until the end of the battle, and Mendion himself wears seams from the start. While the health of the one who wears a seam is below half, the gold holds where it cracked: they take 10% less damage. One seam per ally, a second fill does not thicken it. Dispel cannot take a seam off, and it stays even if Mendion falls: it is not a buff, it is set gold
Awakening at level 100: the gold runs into nearby cracks, and Gold Fill also leaves a seam on the allies next to its target

Gold Fill
Mendion dips his brush into his vessel and with one flick sends liquid gold to the ally with the lowest share of health on the whole field. The gold runs into every crack: a heal and a Cleanse that removes Armor Break, Wound, poisons, burning and other weakenings, everything but hard control. The ally is left with a golden seam

Ability 2 · when an ally falls, once per battle, opens at level 30
My Own Shard
When an ally that is not summoned falls, its afterglow cracks apart, and Mendion puts it back together with gold, chipping off a piece of himself where one is missing. He pays 25% of his current health, and 1 s later the fallen ally rises on its cell with part of its health and a seam already on. If that ally has already risen once in this battle, the ability waits for the next death. Mendion cannot mend himself: there would be no one to do it

Look
- an early batch, between Unarion and Akrion in height, sturdier than Akrion but without Unarion's bulk, shoulders lowered and head bowed like a master over his bench
- white glazed ceramic held together by a net of golden seams that run wherever the cracks went, like a mended bowl, and in places pure gold instead of a plate, where he gave his own shard to a brother
- a round head like a bowl glued together from pieces, with blue light for eyes, and a round blue core in his chest whose glass is crossed by a golden seam too: even the core is mended
- a gold “12” on his shoulder, crossed by a seam
- a small white ceramic vessel with a gold rim and a short spout in his left hand, glowing with liquid gold, and a thin brush with a golden tip in his right
- a ceramic box of spare shards on his belt, in case someone is a piece short
How to play
Put him in the second or back row: Gold Fill reaches any ally on the field, and My Own Shard raises the fallen where they fell, so there is no point keeping Mendion near the front. A seam holds while an ally is below half health, so it gives the most to those who stand on the edge for a long time: Unarion, Marta, the whole front line. Marta twice over, since below half her Steam goes off, and the steam and the seam switch on together. Cleanse takes Armor Break off Unarion, and Armor Break on him lowers Measure for all his neighbors at once, so Mendion mends exactly what breaks Unarion. With Tobrin he makes Light of Hope on two healers, and the patch and the seam land on the same most wounded ally
Constructs cannot be healed, so he does not mend Akrion's posts or Seyvar's bushes, and My Own Shard is never spent on summons. Drop of Light for an early first fill, Field Medkit and Lightline Offcut suit him, the last two make the fill stronger. Silence before his first cast, assassins who dive into the back line (he has 440 health and pays a quarter of his current health for My Own Shard) and fast burst that kills an ally while it is still above half and its seam does not hold yet all work well against him
